two more wildcards?
things are pretty strange when it comes to baseball in this town these days. due to that, i almost missed this news: MLB has announced two additional teams will be admitted into the post-season. Seriously though, a 1 game playoff to decide who gets the wildcard? isn't that kind of the point of a 162 game season? as much as it would have been nice this past year... how does that give any preference to the team that took the "first" wildcard? i think i need some more detail on this one, but what do you guys think?

Ridiculous. Only purpose is to get more TV revenue. If Selig has his way, MLB will become the NBA, where over half of the teams make the playoffs, and you just have to be mediocre in order to get in.
ReplyDeleteThat being said - if there had been one more wild card spot, the Sox would have been in the playoffs this year.
Follow-up thought.
ReplyDeleteNormally, the Sox have been pretty happy to win the wild card.
But now, if they win the wild card, they have to play a one-game playoff game, when anything could happen.
It's not going to be good enough to just get the wild card anymore. Sox need to go for the pennant.
I was thinking of this the other day. It's really going to put a lot of pressure on the Sox to win the division and thus make sure to win those games that they're supposed to win. It's one of the reasons that I don't think we'll see Wakefield back with the team - I see the Sox doing whatever they can to have 5 legit starts lined up.
