Pedroia's Stuggles Explained?

I always check in with Joy of Sox in the morning for a synopsys of the previous night's Sox game. Imagine my terror when I opened it up to see this headline: "Pedroia Returns To Boston, Surgery A Possibility"

Petey's knee is bothering him, which explains his uncharacteristic troubles at the plate. It sounds like this is just a precautionary measure, but I wouldn't be suprised to see him on the DL soon. With Lowrie's shoulder hurting, I'm not sure who would be taking his place at 2B - would the Sox have to call someone up? Iglesias up to play SS, with Scutaro moving to 2B?

  2. And, perhaps, Carl Crawford would move up into the 2-spot.

  3. hardballtalk reports that it's just a bruised kneecap and that he'll be back in the lineup on Friday. Phew!

There have been so many injuries lately. Latest: Joba Chamberlin has a torn ligament and will need Tommy John. Yikes. So much for the Yanks bullpen... Related question - it seems to me that part of Joba's problem is that the Yankees never really knew what to do wit him - first he was a reliever, then a starter, than a reliever, and throughout it all they kept changing his the innings limit. It seems to me like all this messing about really affected his development - the guy was nasty when he first came up but has been a shadow of his previous self the last year or so. Is this SOP for developing pitchers or did the Yanks misplay managing Joba's career?
