Long Runs and Water

So i'm trying to figure out the best way to stay hydrated on my long runs. At the moment, i'm thinking that the best thing is to pick up a hand strap water bottle (something like this).

What are your thoughts? How do you stay hydrated? If you use a hand strap water bottle, what kind do you use and/or recommend?

  1. That's basically what I use. (Mine is a "Nathan Quickdraw" but it looks essentially the same.) I generally carry it on runs longer than 10 miles, give or take 3 miles, depending on the heat.

If you're like me, when you start using it you are going to find it annoying. Even though the strap lets it hang on your hand without gripping it, you still have this weight attached to your hand that you never had before. After three or four runs, though, I got completely used to it and I barely even realize it's there anymore.

The other approach would be to get one of those belts with the little water bottles on it, but I'm personally not that keen on having something strapped around my waist.

Having something close at hand to drink can be a little dangerous. I try to limit my drinking to a squirt or two every mile.

Generally, that means I'm empty after 10 miles or so. If I'm going on a significantly longer run, I'll plan my run to pass by a refreshment stand, convenience store, or I'll loop back by wherever I parked my car, so I can refill my bottle.

I also tend to drink a good bit pre-run, all of which will generally be lost through perspiration.
